A Truth About The Famous Mullaperiyar DAM in Kerala,India which is now under a BIG THREAT

Preface: This post is purely taken out from another blog which is written in Malayalam – Nammude boolokam. Pictures used in this post are taken by Mr. Faizal Muhammed who is a photo journalist for a leading print media in Kerala. Faizal published all the mullapperiyar related photos in his blog two years before. One can see the pathetic condition of the dam in the photos below. The funniest thing is, almost all media have the same kind of photos and visuals. But no one is publishing it in their media. Just because of vested interests and their not-so-serious mentality towards a catastrophic disaster which will occur in Kerala in near future. Let us do something, at least the smallest thing that we can do in regard of Mullapperiyar.
later it is then Translated by "Santhosh J" who is is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 India License. here i am copy pasting those article blow to Pass it to all the keralites and to my friends to understand them the real truth about the Mulleperiyar Dam.......
Many people still believe that the so called dangerous situation in Mullapperiyar dam is just a hype created by Kerala government and Keralites. I hope this article will atleast show some shocking scenes from the ground zero. Mullaperiyar dam is one of the oldest of its kind in South India. It was built before 110 years using some jurassic technologies, which the builder himself tells the ‘estimated’ life of dam is 50 years. The dam breach is 60 years over due now!
Mullaperiyar-full This dam has a height of 54 meters (177 feet) and a basement of 44.2 meters (145 feet). It is built with a mixture of Lime stone and mortar. When it was built, there was no reinforced concrete or similar techniques. The engineer who built this dam calculated that this dam will stand for 50 years. After building the dam there was an agreement between princely state of Travancore and then Madras presidency. It was purely an unfair dealing. The agreement says of leasing out the land area of reservoir for 999 years.
Kerala was giving water to Tamilnadu. It is, and it will. No problem. Problem comes in the other way. The dam is not safe to carry water more than 136 feet of water. Tamilnadu wants it to be raised to 142 feet. Whereas in late 1970s itself central water committee suggested not to raise water level beyond 136 feet as the dam is not in fit condition. Fact is that even in 136 feet water level, Tamilnadu will be able to get water. Another interesting fact is that Tamilnadu pays Andhrapradesh Rs. 3 crores per TMC of water, and Rs. 40,000 for 70 TMC of water! Shall we call it incompetency for Government of Kerala? We should!
See the image below where you can see the week wall of the dam. You should see the cross section of the dam in the image above also to understand the impact of a breach!

Mullaperiyar Dam as it is seen with water level at 115 feet.
Mullaperiyar Dam as it is seen with water level at 115 feet.
Image below, you can see the cracks very clearly. Generally the security system there will not allow anyone to photograph this. Once, Indian navy was called for to photograph the cracks in the dam. But after boarding the boat, Navy got a call from ‘Higher’ authorities to come back! Understand, this “STRONG” wall is protecting the lives of 35 lakhs+ people who live downstream and 5 districts which are in the vicinity of this dam.

See the reservoir of Mullaperiyar! Good. Right? What Tamilnadu say is even if the Mullaperiyar dam is breached, Idukki dam will be able to stop water at it. Hey TN, what are your trying to say? Just forget about the thousands of people who are living between Mullaperiyar and Idukki dams? (Then, why can’t we forget people in Tamilnadu?!)
idukki1
This is the gate of the “Srikovil”! Key is with Tamilnadu. What a pity. Our neighbor has the key to our home! And for sure, it will not be opened to a Keralite.

Here comes the super scenes. The below is inside the tunnel. Reservoir is on the right wall of this tunnel. You can see water oozing from the wall. Mind it. It is not any intended hole or crack. But it is one which developed in time course.

Breach of this dam will be so disastrous that, the high court building in Eranakulam will be under water! So, think.
Dear Tamilnadu, Please don’t try to say that all these photos are taken inside my home!
I wish I get more details and photographs in this regard. Please pass the word…

Save Mullaperiyar Dam, Save Kerala

Credits for the pictures goes to Mr. Faisal Muhammed. Thank you Faisal. You did a wonderful work.

3. Dear friend, nice to see some touching fotos and some sentimental comments in your blog.
Please remember that agreements like a dam has been leased by a formal agreement to give water supply to another state and manage the place is not taking the right of Kerala people. Your foto of the temple and the key is very interesting.

Please also remember Padmanabapuram Palace in Kanyakumari is managed by Kerala govt, in the heart of Kanyakumari Dt, 25 Km from the border.
Kanyakumari people are not agitating that Kerala police and officers are controlling the place and it belongs to Kerala.
There are issues related to the safety of the Dam, as well as water supply to the Tamil Nadu dry districts. That is a different story.
Dont bluff and exaggerate your words with down-right sentiments.

  5. @Dr Janetius :- sir i know what you are saying.. but sor you know that kerala has their own right to build a new dam but, thamilnaadu govt. take a stay from supreme court to stop keralas plans to build a new DAM.. the main purpose of kerala govt. by building the DAM is only about the safety of the people here......
but TN Govt. did not hearing the the real truth about this issue.. if anyone one the person from the TN govt. will open their eyes infront of the Mullepperiyar dam they will understand the actual threat. but they dont want to understand this,..... also sir... Court Give Permission to Kerala. but it got somehow a delay from some higher offices from the Central Govt. due to the influence of the TN govt.

  6. If the tamilians are damn sure about the safety of Mullaperiyar whay can't they come and stay in kerala. We will be ready to go to tamilnadu. Since Kerala is safe from Mullapperiyar they don't have any hesitation right!

  7. i do not understand why tamilnadu is opposing the construction of a new dam...because if the present one breaches, tamilnadu will not get any water....also if a new one is built with larger capacity they can easily achieve their demand of increasing the storage ....i suppose it is related to the issue of the contract getting lapsed on dam breach and the need to enter into a fresh lease agreement which may not be as favourable as the current one....therefore in the interest of protecting the lives of the large section of people threatened by the precarious condition of the dam...what kerala govt ought to do is to assure tn govt of its bonafides and give legally binding guarantees that the lease would continue without change even if a new dam is built....and get moving fast together....my 2 cents !!

  8. Does any one know, how long will it take to build a new dam? Do we have any experienced engineers in this group ?

  9. Forget about everything. The important fact is that each one in the world has the right to live.
I heard many people are telling that the Dam is SAFE !!!. I am requesting them to visit the places such as "chappath" and "vandiperiyar" once and you will see the people weeping their what else they can do. What the mistake they did ?. Did they stolen something or killed somebody. If something went wrong each one of us are responsible for that.
We are the part of state that has got
    # 100 literacy
    # high percentage of growth in finance as well as in business
    # less number of jobless people
    # lacks of brilliant heads IITns engineers and doctors

WE HAVE THE POWER COMMON GUYS... PUT OUR HANDS TOGETHER AND RISE THE SOUND. SAY LOUDER "WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIVE "

  11. While taking any decision, no part of our country should be adversely affected – whether TN or Kerala. In case the water flow is TN’s issue, the end result of any decision must be such that TN gets whatever water/other resources currently it gets – not even a drop less than what it gets now, while simultaneously protecting the interests of Kerala. We must remember that these states are only part of our great India and not independent states.
Just for the sake of vote bank and their vested interests, politicians involve in unwarranted public comments on the issue, inciting people and creating hatred amongst the people of India. This is not a welcome move. What I feel is that we must work together to create better living conditions in our country rather than wasting our life and time in destabilizing it.

  12. if kerala govt really want to save the people u can work on enchance the existing dam rite..?? why take the risk of building a new dam and sparing a lot of time...?? isn't tat obvious tat they wanna exploit this situation..?? @linish : wat a stupid solution. hey do any of u guys knw wat the proposed plan by kerala...?? hw can u say without even seeing the plan...The plan is totally for the benefit of the mallus. Kerala govt is trying to exploit the situation and bulid a dam in a way to produce electricity and spare little of water to TN. As per kerla's plan lot of water eill be wasted into the arabian sea and abt half only reaches TN. Lot of peasants are dependend on this water. And u Mr.ABDUL NAHAZ NOOHO , wat u mean by our neighbour has the key for our land..? if we think somethin lik tat no mallus can get gud education from cbe, chennai etc.

    ReplyDelete
  13. It is good to remember that we do depend on each other... Natural resources are to be shared... however, safety issues need to be the first priority. What does Kerala gain by draining the whole water to the Arabian sea? But can the state sit idle if its people are in constant threat? I have read a number of arguements in support of TN. All seem to be dam sure about the impeccable state of the dam!!!It is like your neighbour has put wild and dangerously ferocious tiger in your house where your baby is sleeping peacefully saying it is safe because the tiger has not done anything until now....just watching what will happen.... put yourself in the shoues of the neighbour...!!!! Now about it being a ploy to control the people of TN....It is known the food you grow is not consumed only by you... we depend on that....So why can't the govenments sit down and sort it out more sensibly, logically, practically, without ulterior motives but with mutual respect and social responisbility? After all we are all humn bings first, then what we are, Indians, Mllu, Tamilian etc.

  15. Lets not fight on this!! One question prevails. If new dam is a concern , let Kerala lower the water level in the dam to 120. How about that? Is that a problem then. Why is not anyone talking about that solution.

  16. The leak shown inside the Tunnel is normal. Go and see the K.R. Sagar in Mysore where I have seen such type of leak on the main wall of the Dam at several places way back in 1979.

The Dams across Krishna and Godavari are about 80 years old and are not perceived as life threatening.

If the third party experts says that the Dam is week and needs to be replaced then no one is gong to oppose it. After studying all technical views the Super court directed to raise the level further to 152 feet. Then where is the point that the Dam is weak.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Cyprian said is correct, when the third eye will identified where the dam has got weak, then no one to fight, all needs to take care of people this is the main point, nothing else on behind the scene. Already many technicians are said, the dam is not weak it reflects supreme court also, then why should the kerala state opposing it... Previous record says, the dam is planned more than 900 years.. but the situation is not like this... when politician are awake from this issue then people wont say... now the situation turned to people, definitely this would take some time to become normal till than we also wait... 'THIRD PARTY NEEDS TO EXAMINE MULLAI PERIYAR DAM' if results come, no one to say or fight in regard this. all will accept.

  20. Abdul,

As per the new proposed dam, more water will go to Arabian sea and used for power generation. But four districts of TN will become deserts and pre independence famine will struck leading to lots of unrest and cultural detrioration!
Pls note that dam (as verified by experts commitee formed by supreme court), short, medium and long term strengthing measures have been completed. You picture does not show cause anyof the such works done.
Your politicians are bluffing you all for power generation! In India there are 120 dams which are all more than 100 yrs old.Kallanai was built 1900 yrs back and still serving. So do not spread hatred. And everytime this issue is being raised first by Kerala politicians only, and choas prevails! Educate others rather than creating fear!Let there be harmony between the two states as it has been for several centuries!

      Then why we have ENGINEERS....
Before writing a blog analyze the issue fully. Don't be a sentimental idiot. Engineers are saying it is strong, but politicians are making some rumors to do politics business. Tell us how did you determine the strength?

  22. Hi there,it is easy for the unaffected people to formulate theories and opinions. Simple wisdom is if something thretens your life, simply get rid of it and seek alternatives. Can any right thinking MIND ever consider a dam BUILT TO BE SAFE FOR 50 YEARS BY THE DESIGNER AS A SAFE dam...??? Forget about the 999 years-long lease agreement in this modern world of democracy, human rights, fundumental rights etc....If it is about the agreement and its fairness, well,we need to follow the standards set by civilized world which is against any kind of exploitation or oppression... but not the kind of agreement made by unkind people if not svages centuries ago!!! I think the solution lies in constructing a new dam and making a sensible and realistic agreement ....acceptable to both... That is what an agreement really means. Why should Tamil Nadu fear that??? Please understand that safety of human life is far more important than trade agreements.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Are the kerala government ready to accept all the agreements done before, TN will accept to built the new dam to solve the fear of Kerala people
    1) Extend the control of new dam to 999 years by TN government.

    2) Same level of water outflow for irrigation.

    3) Allow TN to produce electricity in the new dam.

    4) The place of new dam should be determined by TN government.

    Are you ready?

  24. WHISTLES BLOWs … with DAM Controversy issue!

Indian culture is rich but the substantial erosion has taken place can be noticed due to the controversies initiated, created and well nested all around problem of this Dam Safety.

This is by now known to all as is merely because of our off shoot modern day politics initiated and well played for years by any tom-dick and harries playing politics without concerns “of and for” the people.

On a wider scale, this is an ideal example that our Democracy in its form is not much suitable and supportive to us as a nation unless clean clear good policies adopted plus able and only capable politicians who understand the needs of people are put up in right top places with mission perspectives for betterment of nation. Participation of good persons by putting them on the higher chairs of power will selectively suffice the needs. Thereby, the Games in the name of Democracy will come to the end.

It therefore calls for serious review and modifications of Democratic Structure to make it safe on urgent basis. Politicians for some illicit gains falling into fierce conspiracies and games for capturing votes have substantially weakened the Democracy and damaged its anticipated marvel missions. Its likely to get breached causing colossal loss in Lacs of Crores in very short time as noticed, has already began in various recent scams and frauds..

THUS, WHISTLES BLOW … with this DAM Controversy issue.

People and good politicians now need to awake, come forward to save and serve the nation!
